Defining Model Reliability Across Project Lifecycles
Level of Development (LOD) standards, established by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and BIMForum, define how much an element's geometry and non-graphic data can be relied upon at each project stage.
LOD Progression Breakdown
Clear LOD scoping prevents both under-modeling and excessive data bloat in project BIM models.
- LOD 100 (Conceptual): Conceptual massing with approximate volume, shape, and orientation.
- LOD 200 (Schematic): Generic placeholders indicating approximate quantity, size, and location.
- LOD 300/350 (Construction): Specific assemblies detailed with precise interfaces, connection points, and adjacent material boundaries.
- LOD 400 (Fabrication): Shop-floor detailing complete with fabrication, assembly, and installation notes.
- LOD 500 (As-Built): Field-verified model elements containing operational serial numbers and maintenance records.
