CAD CAM Interview Questions and Answers | CADDEX India

At CADDEX India, we help students prepare for mechanical design and manufacturing interviews by covering frequently asked questions in CAD and CAM tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA, Mastercam, and NX.

1. General CAD CAM Questions

  • Q: What is the difference between CAD and CAM?
A: CAD (Computer-Aided Design) is used for designing and drafting 2D/3D models. CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) is used to generate toolpaths and control CNC machines for manufacturing.
  • Q: What are the benefits of using CAD CAM software?
A: Faster design process, improved accuracy, easy modification, simulation before manufacturing, and reduced production errors.

2. AutoCAD Interview Questions

  • Q: What is a polyline?
A: A polyline is a connected sequence of line or arc segments treated as a single object.
  • Q: How do you use layers in AutoCAD?
A: Layers help organize drawing components and allow visibility control, color assignment, and line-type management.

3. SolidWorks Interview Questions

  • Q: What is the difference between a part and an assembly?
A: A part is a single 3D component, while an assembly combines multiple parts to form a complete product.
  • Q: What is parametric modeling?
A: Parametric modeling allows dimensions and constraints to drive the geometry of the model. Any change updates the model accordingly.

4. CATIA / NX CAD Questions

  • Q: What is Class-A surface modeling?
A: Class-A surfaces are high-quality surfaces used in automotive and aerospace design with perfect curvature continuity (G2/G3). Used mainly in CATIA and NX.
  • Q: Explain Boolean operations.
A: Boolean operations (Add, Subtract, Intersect) are used to combine or modify solids in 3D modeling.

5. CAM & CNC Programming Questions

  • Q: What is G-code?
A: G-code is the language used to control CNC machines. It includes commands for motion, speed, feed, and tool operations.
  • Q: What is a toolpath?
A: A toolpath is the path that a cutting tool follows to machine a part. It is generated in CAM software based on the 3D model.
  • Q: What is the difference between climb and conventional milling?
A: In climb milling, the cutter rotates in the same direction as the feed. In conventional milling, it rotates against the feed direction.

Tips for Cracking CAD CAM Interviews

  • Be clear with basic commands and interface navigation
  • Showcase your project portfolio and mention tools used
  • Understand manufacturing processes if applying for CAM roles
  • Practice G-code reading and toolpath simulation
